What is 'A Waking Dream'?

'A Waking Dream' is a MMORPG which in short means its a Role playing game that lots of people go on at once and play with each other. You may interact with other players in various ways, as well as many computer controlled charecters.

How is this game different from Everquest or other MMORPG's?

Well for starters you won't get a bill from us every month. In fact you will never be charged any money to use this game. Taking it one step farther we have decided to open up the source code, which means that if you are so technically inclined you can change the game in any way possible. There are also a lot of changes to the game logic which will make the gaming experience much different than any other MMORPG than you have ever played.

Will there be PvP in this game?

Probably the most common question when you talk about any game on-line involving other players is will there be PVP or player vs. player. The short answer to this is yes. However before you run away or start ranting undersstand the following: there will be areas where PVP is not allowed, a player will not be able to take your items (only money), a player will be punished for killing another player unprovoked on a scale acording to their level difference, there are organized methods of PVP which will allow non-fatal matches.

Will I be able to kill gods?

At the moment this is not decided on, however it is likely that you will be able to. That said I would not expect to be able to do this very soon in your adventuring career. Gods are what their name implies.... you know the creators of all... I mean come on they are gods. If you will in fact be able to fight and possibly kill gods in the game do not expect it to be easy.

Will there be guilds in the game?

Yes we think that guilds are a great way to socialize with other characters and it presents a very nice method for facilitating raids. There will be many facilities in the game to make guild creation, management, and facilitation of meetings and such far easier that was previously possible in other games.

Do I have to fight in the game?

No, we have designed the game for many different levels of interest. Some people do not like fighting games but they do like to go online and intereact with lots of other people and like the idea of Role playing. For the people like this (and there are quite a few) a separate trade called Craftsman has been created. In this trade you can make and sell items of your particular craft. No combat would be envolved here. You will also have safe routes from one city to another to make travel far easier as would be expected. However you will not likely find yourselves in some of the more interesting dungeons, caves, wondrous lands of the world we create.

Can I own property?

Interestingly enough the answer here is planned to be a yes. As a player you can store a house which will allow you to store many items and other things of interest within your house. There will be no maintenance cost to the house... you pay once and thats it. As a guild leader you may buy a guild hall. However there are only so many halls and houses when they are all sold you have to buy one from another player.

Will I have to rely on other people?

Yes and No, although mostly no. The short answer is no you can start the game and never speak to anyone else in the game who is a real person and level all the way up to the top. You can buy things from merchants when you need and never interact with anyone else. In fact encounters will be designed so that there will always be things you can do without getting other people involved. That being said there will of course be things that can not be done alone. Killing a god would be one example.

Will I have to buy updates to this game?

Unlike most of the other games out there this is not written to make money. It was written for people who like to play RPG's by people who like to play RPG's. All upgrades will be done automatically and will not cost you one penny. The only money you may have to spend on this game is some comp upgrades if your computer is too slow. Which brings me to the next question.

How fast does my computer need to be?

Unfortunately we won't really know this until the game is actually completely done. Even then the answer is going to be relatively vague I'm afraid. As a general rule here more speed is going to be good :-). At a bare minimum you will need a 3D card and probably 256mb of RAM. We'll try and flesh this out a bit as we get closer to launch.

What operating system will this run on?

It will be tested on Linux and Windows as those are the intended target audiences. It will however most likely run on BSD and other *nix's. The server will also run on both windows and Linux.
